Clip-Chip analyzes the attitude during sports
Wearables for the sports sector measure the pulse, count steps and evaluate the performance when jogging. The tracker from Lumo Bodytech focuses on the analysis of posture and performance while running. The sensor chip Lumo Run can be attached with a clip on the rear waistband of regular sports pants and measures from there in addition to speed and cadence, the vertical vibration, rotation and lowering of the pelvis during exercise directly to the spine. The app processes this data into statistics and personalized running tips to perfect individual performance. The training plan, which focuses on its own priorities, is designed to help runners to achieve even better results and, above all, to prevent injuries due to incorrect movement sequences.
Lumo Run: Running without ballast
Sensors in the shoe or the fitness tracker as a bracelet – all this is there, but sometimes these wearables interfere with certain movements. Also, the clip version of the Lumo Run could move or fall while running, but the option reduces the focus on the essentials of training. As an alternative to the clip, Lumo Bodytech has designed running pants that hold the sensor in place. They are available as shorts and leggings, each with a small pocket on the waistband. With the zipper, the sensor is safely stored with this option and can be removed again before washing.
Lumo Run tracker and sportswear – smart yes, but intelligent?
Integrating Lumo Run in sportswear was a smart move from the developers. However, the sportswear is not really smart in itself, it only serves as a storage for the sensor. Elsewhere, more sophisticated products are being used: The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) has about the Competence Center Wearable AI, ie wearable Artificial Intelligence, a research field Interactive Textiles. A team from DFKI has developed sensory tissue that will take smart sportswear to a new level: movements are traced on the basis of the muscle contractions that cause changes in the shape of the garment. In the future, pants and shirts can correct posture and correct execution of exercises by evaluating respiration, heart rate, muscle tension and balance. Not only for athletes would be worth it, also in the field of rehab, sports medicine or occupational safety, these textiles could apply. The project won Telekom's Fashion Fusion Challenge during the Berlin Fashion Week 2017.
